Renewing your License and Registration in NL
The process for renewing your license and registration in Newfoundland and Labrador has changed over the years and we’re here to help you stay up-to-date.
Renewing Your License
You must renew your driver’s license every 5 years on or before your birthday. Your expiry date can be found on your driver’s license card. It is your responsibility to ensure that your driver’s license is valid. Renewals can be completed online at MyGovNL, by mail or fax, or in-person (locations and Contact Information).
It is important to note that all outstanding fines and tickets that appear on your record must be paid, in addition to renewal fees. The process also varies depending on how long your driver’s license has been expired for. For detailed information about renewing your driver’s license, please visit this link on the Government of NL website. Additional information can be found here.
Vehicle Registration
Your vehicle registration must be renewed annually. The registration expires the last day of the month shown on your registration document. Service NL advises residents to mark this date in their calendar yearly. Renewals can be completed online at MyGovNL, by mail or fax, or in-person (locations and Contact Information).
Please note that effective June 15, 2023, the Motor Registration Division no longer issues validation stickers with vehicle registrations and renewals. Vehicle owners are still required to renew their registration, as per the Highway Traffic Act and the Fees Policy, however, there is no requirement to display stickers on license plates. Copies of insurance and registration documents should continue to be kept in vehicles at all times. Stickers currently issued must remain on the plate and will be valid until their expiry date.
If you need extra help remembering when to renew your registration, you can sign up to change your renewal date to your month of birth. For example, if you were born in the month of November, your vehicle registration would expire on November 30. This request can be made in person at any Motor Registration Division office. For further information about this option, please call 1-877-636-6867. For more detailed information about vehicle registration, please visit this link on the Government of NL website.
