When life doesn’t fit in a box, a broker makes the difference.

If you’ve ever been told “we don’t insure that” because your life includes more than just a house and a couple of cars, you’re not alone—and you’re not the problem. We see this all the time.

We recently helped a new customer, Bill, who was turned away by a national direct insurance company. Not because his situation was unsafe or unusual, but because it didn’t fit neatly into their system.

On the surface, this was an easy file. Bill and his wife owned a nice home in a good neighbourhood, had two vehicles, two experienced adult drivers, and a clean history. The direct insurer was perfectly happy to insure the house and cars.

That changed when Bill mentioned the rest of his life.

Like many people, Bill and his wife also owned ski-doos, ATVs, and a cabin. There was also a shed with a wood stove.

That’s when the direct company stepped back.

They didn’t want the recreational vehicles.

They didn’t want the cabin.

And they definitely didn’t want the wood stove—even though it was fully certified, properly installed, and well maintained.

What made the property even less attractive to the direct writer Bill used to deal with was the wood stove.  And what made that even more frustrating is that Bill is a firefighter.

Fire safety isn’t something he takes lightly—it’s his profession. He understands risk, maintenance, and the importance of doing things properly. The shed wasn’t slapped together. It was solid, clean, and clearly cared for. There’s even a dart board and a TV, making it a great place to watch the game on a Saturday night.

This wasn’t a risky setup.

It just wasn’t simple.

Why the Directs Walk Away

Direct insurance companies are built for speed. They want predictable, profitable risks they can quote quickly and move on from. The moment you add recreational vehicles, a cabin, or anything that requires a real conversation, many of them lose interest.

Not because it can’t be insured—but because they don’t want to insure that kind of account.

Where We Come In

At Munn Insurance, this is exactly what we do.

We work with people and groups—firefighters included—who understand risk and take pride in how they maintain what they own. We know how to place coverage with insurers who want this business and know how to price it properly.

That often means better coverage, better service, and in many cases, better rates.

Been Turned Away? Don’t Stop There.

If a direct insurer has ever told you:

  • “We don’t insure that”
  • “That’s outside our appetite”
  • “You’ll need to go elsewhere”

Give Munn Insurance a call.

You’re not the problem.

You just need someone willing to look at the whole picture.
