Get a Grip on Wet Weather Driving.
We see our fair share of rain. Too much perhaps. And when the weather changes, so do the road conditions. Wet weather driving can be stressful. The risk of hydroplaning is ever present. Kayla Squires, a Customer Service Representative with Munn Insurance, captured this video recently showing just what can happen when the roads get wet. Luckily everyone is ok.
If you have ever experienced that horrifying moment when it feels like the car is lifted off the road and you lose control you know how scary and dangerous hydroplaning can be. This happens when one of your tires encounters more water than it can scatter. The result is loss of steering, braking and control. In the worst case, it can also lead to a serious accident.
Hydroplaning can occur on any wet road surface; however, the first 10 minutes of a light rain can be the most dangerous. When light rain mixes with oil residue on a road, it creates slippery conditions that can cause cars, especially those going too fast, to hydroplane; causing the car to skid out of control on the wet road.
Remember these tips to avoid a dangerous accident if roads are wet:
- Keep your tires properly inflated
- Rotate and replace tires when necessary
- Slow down when roads are wet: the faster you drive, the harder it is for your tires to scatter the water
- Stay away from puddles and standing water
- Avoid driving in outer lanes where water tends to accumulate
- Try to drive in the tire tracks left by the cars in front of you
- Turn off cruise control
- Avoid hard braking
- Try not to make sharp or quick turns
The chance of being involved in a motor vehicle accident increases during poor weather conditions such as rain, fog, ice and snow. When the road conditions get bad, slow down. Or consider staying home. If you must venture out, make sure you take your time.
